North Shore Wanderings - Day 2 - Part 2

After our excursion to Partridge Falls, we headed towards Grand Portage State Park. Along the way we stopped by some gorgeous scenic overlooks.

This is overlooking the Suzie Islands and Lake Superior.

It only took about 20 minutes to get to the state park, which is right on the Canadian boarder.

We went into the visitors center to check it out and look for a couple souvenir type things in the gift shop.

We were really excited to get out and hike, so got on our way towards High Falls.

It was a beautiful walk up to the falls.

We discovered it was much faster to access Middle Falls from the Canadian side of the park, so we decided to shoot for that once we had crossed the boarder.

The falls were simply magnificent!

The waterfall runs into a deep gorge and continues on down the Pigeon River.

We could even see a little bit of Lake Superior from our vantage point.

There are several little plat forms where you can get different views of the waterfall, we made sure to get some pictures from each one.

I just loved this boardwalk with the tall pines shooting up on both sides.

On our way back we stopped by this cool marsh of sorts and watched the geese swim around the fridged waters, there was still some snow and ice along the shoreline.

After our exploring was over, we went through the boarder crossing and watched for the road for Middle Falls, which was only about a mile down the road. We found it easily and were able to park right along the river and only had a short walk down to see the falls.

It isn't a very large waterfall, but was still really pretty.

We sat on some rocks by the water for a bit and I enjoyed messing around with the foamy bubbles along the shoreline.

We didn't spend too much time there, and were anxious to get up the Thunder Bay, Ontario, and settle into our hotel before doing any more exploring for the day,

It was quite the adventure, navigating around a city neither of us were familiar with, without any cell service or GPS. We kicked it old school and watched for street signs, followed our saved directions and managed to find the hotel without too much hassle.

After we were all settled in we hung out for a bit and discussed ideas for supper, and finally settled on going to Mongo's Grill, which was only a few miles down the road and would be easy to get to.

It was super delicious and totally hit the spot after a long day!
We stopped by this intriguing looking grocery store we had passed earlier, simply because we were curious what a Canadian Superstore would be like. I had seen the Atlantic Superstores last year when we were in Canada, but this was a bit different.

Deborah was really excited about all the Canadian souvenirs ;p We spent quite a while just meandering around the store taking it all in, I wish we had a place like that around here. It felt like a better version of a Walmart/Whole Foods with tons of variety. We were pretty impressed ;)

After we got back to the hotel we decided to go for a quick dip in the pool to relax and soak our somewhat achy bodies ;) It felt really good!

It was such a fun day with lots of great memories made. We slept great that night and felt like our trip was off to a really fantastic start! I'll share more about our time in Thunder Bay in my next post. :)
