Exploring Door County - Part 1

Hey all, I thought I would brighten up the wintery feed of photos with some posts from a trip we went on last summer. Back in August, Nathan and I met up with our friend Tia, in Door County, Wisconsin and did some exploring in the surrounding area and Washington Island.

Day one, August 10th, we got about an hour and a half from home and stopped in Grand Rapids at the Aldi there and got some snacks for the road, and food to eat at our cottage during the next few days.

It was an easy day of driving, and really only stopped for gas and restroom breaks. We just went down to Minneapolis then over to Green Bay, before heading north.

From Green Bay we drove north up the peninsula to Door County, the north tip of the little finger that juts out into Lake Michigan.

We entered Door County, around Sturgeon Bay, at 7:30 and reached our cottage in Gills Rock around 8:00. It was a cute little place we found on Airbnb and so cozy!

The next morning, we got up and ate some breakfast while Tia slept in ;)

We got going that morning around 11:30 and decided to start out by venturing across the street and down a scenic road to the water of Lake Michigan.

Just about every cove on the peninsula has some cool story like this one.

The water was so clear and the beaches were all pure white rock, so different than how things are on Lake Superior around here.

The water at this beach was kind of chilly and it was pretty windy, so we decided to keep going down the road and see what else we could find. I had brought a book with me that was at the Airbnb that talked about all the parks and tourist spots around the area that we used as a little guidebook of where to go.

The first place we found was called Door Bluff Headlands County Park, we parked and walked down a pine needle covered path to a rocky drop off along the shoreline. It was so quiet and peaceful.

We walked for quite a while along the shoreline, just to see what we could see.

Finally we found a safe way to get down to the water, but there were drop offs on each side, so we couldn't walk along the water for long.

But we did stop for a bit to enjoy the view.

After a nice break, we started back up the trail to see if there was another way back up the cliffs than the way we came.

Nathan was anxious to get up the cliffs and do some climbing. So, us girls stayed down below and let him climb up to a vantage point to take in the view.

First he had to ride this log, obviously...

From up there he couldn't see any other way back up the cliff, so we just headed back the way we came.

It took a few tries up different trails to find the right one, but eventually we made it back to the parking lot. ;)

The small dirt road that led back to the main paved road was covered in a gorgeous canopy of trees, it was so tranquil. We rode with the windows down and took in the fresh, warm air and enjoyed every minute of it :)

Our next stop was Ellison Bluff county park, which I will talk about in the next post.
