On May 8th, we woke up early and took a drive across Thunder Bay in search of Mission Island, which we had seen on the map and wanted to explore. We got there around 9:00 am and were greeted by the very chilly "spring" air as soon as we got out of the vehicle.
We bundled up and decided to brave the cool weather and take a walk around the island.
This little squirrel welcomed as we made our way down the boardwalk path to the water. It was so cute!
I loved the breath taking view from the boardwalk. The water was crashing up on the shoreline yet somehow it was still so quiet and peaceful.
That out in the distance is Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, which is actually about an hour drive away from Thunder Bay. But the way the peninsula juts out into the bay, it makes pretty close by water! Doesn't it really look like a giant laying down sleeping?!
I can imagine this being a gorgeous little oasis in the summer time when everything is all green and alive. But we still really enjoyed it even though it was a little bleak out that morning, nature is always beautiful :)
This island serves as protected land for birds and wildlife habitats.
We took our time as we made our way along the path that was around the shoreline of the island.
We saw lots of trees that had been taken out by beavers, we never saw any dams though which we thought was a little baffling ;p
There were lots of geese and ducks floating around in the bay where the water was all melted off.
Had to stop off in this little patch of pine trees to take some photos of course ;)
It was around 10:00am when we got back to the parking lot and we were pretty chilled, so decided to find somewhere warm to spend the rest of our morning.
The next post will be about our time at the Botanical Conservatory! Stay tuned ;)
