North Shore Wanderings - Day 1

Early this spring I took a trip along the North Shore of Lake Superior up to Thunder Bay, ON with my dear friend Deborah. We spent lots of time exploring along the way in one of my favorite parts of the country, where there is a waterfall around just about every bend.

Caribou Falls
We took off on our grand little adventure on Sunday, May 6th. After meeting up in Bemidji we headed towards Grand Rapids, where we stopped at Aldi to stock up on food for the week.

After that we stayed on the road for several hours till we reached Caribou Falls on the Caribou River. My husband, Nathan, and I discovered this spot while on our honeymoon several years prior, and just loved it! So I was really excited to see it once again and show it off to Deborah.

The wayside rest was much improved since my last time visiting, and the path was a lot better too.

It was a beautiful crisp evening and we enjoyed getting the chance to stretch our legs.

It was only about a mile hike to the waterfall, with only a few steep spots while climbing up the hillside overlooking the river.

Baby cones!

That is Lake Superior out in the distance.

It wouldn't be a hike on the North Shore if there weren't some steps to climb! ;)

This is definitely one of those walks where you feel like you're going nowhere, and turn the bend and bam, something beautiful :)

Still looking good, even after walking down all those steps ;)

The Caribou River tumbles through a system of pools in a gorge before crashing down this cliff side in gorgeous fashion.

The area feels very remote and private, if it had been a warmer day we would have stayed for a long time and waded in the cool water.
But considering it was only about 50 degrees and the water was freezing, we opted for just enjoying the mist hitting our faces before retreating back up the overlook ;)

We took a quick selfie at the top before heading back down the trail :)

It was about 6:00pm by the time we got back to the car and dusk was quickly approaching, so we got back on the road.

There was still snow up on some of these tall hillsides!

The lake was beautifully tranquil
It didn't take long before we reached our destination for the night, The Hungry Hippie Hostel near Grand Marais.

The hosts were so welcoming and we were settled in in no time.

There was a beautiful view of the lake from the porch.

The inside was just as cute as the outside. The decor was so creative and fitting to the northwoods of Minnesota!

There were no other guests there that night, so we had the whole place all to ourselves!

We were pretty hungry (hippies ;) so got right to work fixing up some dinner!

I came across this frozen meal at Aldi earlier that day and thought it looked quick and easy. We just threw it in a pan and it warmed up in no time on the little electric burner they had there for us to use. And it was actually pretty darn good!

We finished unloading all of the things we needed for the night, and watched the sun set behind the trees.

It was a perfect beginning to an amazing week. :)
