This trip began around 6:30am on Thursday, March 2nd, in Bemidji, MN. We stopped by the very frozen Lake Bemidji so I could capture a few moments of the sun coming up, before we made our way towards Duluth. It was very cold, only about 8 degrees, but worth the little walk down to get these shots.
Driving into the sunrise was both gorgeous and perfectly annoying at the same time, haha.
I always watch out for these pipes and their smokey clouds billowing into the sky along this route, it means we are getting close to our destination!
Coming over the hill overlooking Duluth always gives one such a thrill, no matter how many times you've seen it. It a sight to behold!
Large mounds of iron ore are a very common sight around this area.
Right here is where we got the first glimpse of the lift bridge.
Some of the harbor was starting to thaw out a bit, but most of it was still quite frozen.
There were a few brave souls walking around downtown on this wind biting -4 degree morning.
This is a permanently docked ship that is used for tours near the downtown lake walk.
Timber lodge steakhouse, our favorite restaurant of all time. Partially since it was our first dinner date on our honeymoon as man and wife, but mostly because their food is absolutely amazing!!!
Heading up to the lift bridge heading to the lake walk.
We found a little place to park on the other side of the bridge and got as bundled up as we could, before heading out to brave the cold temps.
I was really wishing I had just brought my full winter garb, it was soo cold! *brrr* But so worth it ;)
It was pretty hazing out, and very sunny, so I was a tad disappointed there wasn't some phenomenal light and clouds to work with, but it was still really pretty and very cool seeing the partially melted water. There were a few ducks and birds flying around and floating in the water. It's amazing the cold temps they can handle!
As we made our way down the open portion of the lighthouse walk we noticed that most of the cement side barriers were totally coated in ice, from the waves crashing up and splashing over the walls all winter. I really enjoyed finding little bits of detail, totally coated in inches of ice!
Walking around on the ice covered rocks was seriously one of the coolest things ever, haha. you'd take a step and it would crack a little then just break away from that section of rock. Some of the ground had a bumpy texture going on like you can see from this picture.
It was quite windy, so there were lots of waves crashing up for us to see. The longer we were out there the more the sky started to clear and get a little more blue, and a little less hazy.
We got to the point where we were uncomfortably cold so started making our way back to the car, so we could drive over to the other side of the bridge and lake walk.
After sitting in the heat for a few minutes I worked up the "courage" to go back out and capture some alternate angles of the lighthouses and surrounding scenery. I know it sounds like I'm being dramatic, but seriously the wind coming off of a partially frozen Lake Superior on an already freezing day, was not pleasant! haha
All of the rocks along this side of the shore were covered in ice too. You wouldn't think that the water would crash up that high, but it apparently does!
We, mostly me, got tired of the cold so decided to drive around town a bit while enjoying the warmth of the car ;)
We drove along the Scenic Byway for a little while till we reached this amazing overlook of the whole city, the harbor, and Superior, WI. Here's a panorama I took on my phone...
Kind of creepy probably, taking pictures of someone's house ;p But I just love the stone, windows, and just all around look of this house!
At 11:00am we decided we better get on our way, heading towards our final destination in IL for the evening.
We crossed over the bridge into Superior, Wisconsin,
The sky was soo pretty as we were leaving the city and made our way on to the open road.
The time passed relatively quickly that day, it was a pretty drive and we stayed occupied listening to an awesome audio book, which always helps ;)
We drove along these massive electrical poles/lines for a while and got to see them assemble some as well. it was pretty cool!
We made our way to the Illinois boarder right as it was beginning to get dark, paid the toll, and only had an hour or so to go before reaching our friends house for the night.
There was a beautiful sunset, I am a major sucker for a good sunset.
We arrived at the Gander's home around 6:30 that evening, and enjoyed some delicious lasagna for dinner. It was fun spending time with these dear friends of ours, visiting and having good conversation as always ;) I don't even remember what time it was when we finally hit the hay that night, but boy did we sleep good ;)
